Several members of Scout Troop 444 have been busy preparing for a 100-mile biking and camping trip this summer! This exciting adventure is part of the troop’s summer plans and will also help Scouts complete the requirements for their Cycling Merit Badge.
This achievement comes after months of hard work and preparation by both the Scouts and their leaders. Based in New Sewickley Township, Troop 444 has 30 active members representing communities throughout Beaver County. Throughout that journey, Communicycle has been proud to come alongside the troop and support their efforts.
The connection began a few years ago when Scoutmaster Bill Deal met Communicycle Executive Director Lee Montanari at a church event. For Lee, a former Scout and Scout leader himself, it was a natural fit. What started as a simple introduction has grown into an ongoing partnership that has benefited both organizations.
Communicycle has been blessed by the hard work and service of Troop 444 members. The Scouts have volunteered at the Monaca Workshop, where they have learned basic bike mechanic skills while helping refurbish bicycles for distribution events. They have also assisted with loading bikes for distributions and have even donated their own bicycles to be repaired and given to others in need.
At the same time, the Scouts have benefited from the partnership as well. Through their involvement with Communicycle, they have developed valuable bike maintenance skills, received bicycles, and even gained confidence on two wheels. In fact, one Scout learned how to ride a bike with the help of Communicycle staff.
Scoutmaster Bill Deal cannot say enough good things about Communicycle and its impact on the troop.
“The environment and staff are incredibly positive and helpful. They clearly have an attitude of service and a genuine desire to help the community. They have welcomed our Scouts, and we look forward to coming back in the future.”
When asked what he would say to other groups considering getting involved, Deal offered an enthusiastic recommendation:
“Do it!! If you enjoy bikes, if you enjoy seeing kids outside, and if you take freedom in seeing kids ride a bike, then this is a worthwhile cause to help your community and join with other like-minded people.”
Partnerships like this support Communicycle’s mission to ensure everyone who wants a bike has one, while building community along the way!
