Thanks to the support of the Shell Fund, Communicycle is expanding its scrap metal recycling program.
Recycling scrap metal is not only a necessity when doing bike collections and refurbishments, but it also serves to financially support Communicycle’s overall program.
A 10’ scrap metal trailer was funded partially by a grant award from the Patterson Christian Ministry Fund in 2022. This trailer can be found accepting donations at Ohio United Presbyterian Church.
The newest scrap metal trailer is 12’ and is one of 3 trailers that has been purchased with funding from the Shell Fund. This trailer has been put into circulation, first being used in early July. The 12’ trailer will move around the county from church parking lots, to local businesses. Social media and the Communicycle website will give updates as to where this trailer can be found.
The second of three trailers from Shell is also a green dump trailer; at 14’ it will be our largest. This trailer will be located in Monaca, just outside the Communicycle central shop.
The third Shell-funded trailer will be a specialty enclosed model dedicated to collecting aluminum cans. Manufacturing is expected to be completed sometime in September. This unique trailer will also be placed outside of the Communicycle Monaca shop. This will be the only location in Beaver County to use aluminum beverage cans to support a local charity. We will be looking for community support. Contact us if you are interested in doing a can drive with your school or scout group to support us!
In 2023, Communicycle collected and recycled 125,900 lbs of metal, raising us $12,673. So far, in 2024, Communicycle has collected and recycled 142,100 lbs of metal, bringing in $14,192!
Scrap metal collection and recycling does more than raise money for Communicycle; the visibility of the trailers is a huge benefit to us. This additional exposure brings in new volunteers, more donated bikes, and even more individuals getting bikes from us.
